About Prof Riyaz Patel
Professor Riyaz Patel is a consultant cardiologist and clinical academic working at UCLH and Barts Health NHS trusts and at University College London (UCL). He graduated from King's College London in 2001, completing specialist training as a cardiologist in 2013, before being elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the European Society of Cardiology in 2018. Having trained and worked across major university hospitals in London and in the USA, he is highly experienced in diagnosing and treating all general medical and cardiology conditions. Uniquely, Professor Patel is also an accomplished scientist having held prestigious fellowship from the British Heart Foundation, NIHR and American Heart Associations. He is currently a tenured Professor of Cardiology at UCL where he leads research into the causes of heart disease, with a focus on cardiovascular risk and the genetics of coronary disease. He chairs global initiatives and consortia in this field with a track record of research funding and has 100+ high-profile research publications. Clinically, Professor Patel is widely regarded among colleagues as an expert diagnostician, taking on challenging or difficult to diagnose cases with pragmatic evidence based decision making and an excellent bedside manner. He is also a recognised international specialist in preventative cardiology and advanced cholesterol management including familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and premature heart disease, being one of only a handful of cardiologists in the UK with this expertise. He is fully accredited in advanced heart imaging techniques including echocardiography and coronary CT angiography. Beyond his academic and clinical work, Professor Patel founded and leads the cardiovascular prevention services at the Barts Heart Centre and chairs the East London CVD prevention group, whose goal is to reduce health inequality and premature heart mortality across East London. He is a senior clinical advisor for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and holds key leadership roles within the NHS across London.
