About

Dr Richard Keld is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Clinical Director at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads the gastroenterology department and oesophageal and gastric cancer services. He has a specialist interest in upper gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary cancers and serves as the Trust’s clinical lead in this field, with expertise in cancer diagnostics and multidisciplinary management.

Dr Keld graduated from the University of Manchester in 1999 and completed his postgraduate training across multiple North West hospitals before undertaking specialist training in gastroenterology and general internal medicine within the North Western Deanery between 2003 and 2011. He also completed a postgraduate research degree at the University of Manchester, focusing on the molecular genetics of oesophageal and gastric cancers and Barrett’s oesophagus, resulting in multiple peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings. He has been awarded the Manchester Medical Research Prize.

His clinical expertise includes the management of a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions, including reflux disease, coeliac disease, gallstone disease, pancreatitis, peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic liver disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. He is highly skilled in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, and enteral stenting.

Dr Keld is actively involved in clinical research as a principal investigator on multiple trials and contributes as a peer reviewer for international journals. He also plays a significant role in education and training, teaching at a national level and supporting the development of junior doctors and allied health professionals.
