He was appointed Senior Lecturer at King's College and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in 2008. He was awarded a chair in Cardiology by King's College in 2017.

Dr Perera subspecialises in interventional cardiology. He treats patients with a range of general heart problems and specialises in the management of ischaemic heart disease (coronary heart disease).

Dr Perera has a keen interest in clinical research and has co-authored numerous publications in his field of expertise.
