Dr McKaig graduated from Glasgow University in 1991. He undertook his postgraduate training as a Gastroenterologist in the East Midlands. Between 1997 and 2001, Dr McKaig was also a researcher at the University of Nottingham, which led to him being awarded a PhD. He was later elected as a fellow of both The Royal College of Physicians, London and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
