Dr Aspasia Stacey Rabba is an educational and developmental psychologist. They are passionate about supporting individuals and their families with evidence-based information and clinical practice. Their clinical experience led them to pursue a PhD to further their knowledge and share this understanding across the autism community and beyond. During their PhD, Dr Rabba developed a family support programme for parents following their child's early diagnosis of autism. This programme comprised two components to support parents post-diagnosis: specialised information for parents to read in their own time; and a single-session family clinic. Collaboration with families and key stakeholders (e.g. paediatricians, allied health) was at the heart of their research which comprised both qualitative and quantitative elements and emphasised the role of the lived experience by parents who had previously received their child's early diagnosis of autism.
Dr Rabba's research highlighted parents' key needs post-diagnosis, measured the perceived impact of diagnosis on parents, and identified primary factors associated with family wellbeing and hence resilience at this critical time. They currently have two published articles, one book chapter, and two pending publications which have resulted from this body of work. Dr Rabba believes that research should not stop there but should continue, and most importantly, be implemented into clinical practice where it can make a real difference. Dr Rabba combines their academic interests and knowledge as a practitioner with continued clinical practice, education, and collaboration with a firm belief that everyone never stops learning.
