Dr Smith graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School. They received a Master's in Science research degree in Anatomy at Trinity College in Dublin, for which they received a Trinity College Post-Graduate Award. Dr Smith completed their advanced training in Ophthalmology in Queensland. Following this, they undertook further fellowship training in Oculoplastic surgery in the UK.
Dr Smith is a member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and the Australasian Society of Cataracts and Refractive Surgeons (AUSCRS). They regularly attend and have presented at national and international conferences.
