About Dr Ahmad Khwanda
Dr Ahmad Khwanda is a Consultant Cardiologist currently practising at Shirley Oaks Hospital in Croydon, where he leads the transthoracic and specialist echocardiography service. He also holds a substantive NHS role as Consultant Cardiologist and Patient Outcomes Lead at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley, where he is responsible for overseeing safe, high-quality cardiology care across multiple sites. Dr Khwanda has developed a strong reputation for his patient-centred approach, combining clinical excellence with a clear, compassionate communication style that empowers patients to understand their condition and make informed decisions about their treatment. He completed his medical degree with honours at Damascus University in 2004 and relocated to the UK in 2005. After passing the GMC PLAB exam, he undertook his general medical training and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2011. He completed specialist cardiology training across several of London’s leading hospitals, including King’s College Hospital, Ealing Hospital, the Princess Royal University Hospital, and Imperial College London. Dr Khwanda has clinical expertise in heart rhythm disorders, heart failure, chest pain, heart valve disease, and preventive cardiology. He is skilled in a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including ambulatory ECG monitoring, stress echocardiography, pacemaker implantation, and cardiovascular screening. His practice includes both insured and self-pay patients. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Khwanda has a strong academic background. He was the local co-investigator for major studies including IMPROVE-IT and Protect-PACE and has published in peer-reviewed journals on a range of cardiology topics. He also authored a chapter in the Oxford Textbook of Heart Failure and is committed to medical education, having served as a Teaching Fellow at Imperial College London. His teaching contributions at the Princess Royal University Hospital have been recognised with multiple awards for excellence in education. Dr Khwanda is a regular participant in multidisciplinary team meetings, working closely with cardiothoracic surgeons, radiologists, and other specialists to ensure coordinated, holistic care for complex cardiac patients.
