Prim. i.R. Univ.Prof. Dr. Kurt Baumgarten war ein anerkannter österreichischer Geburtshelfer. Sein wissenschaftlicher Fokus lag auf dem Gebiet der fetalen Überwachung. Er war Mitglied und Ehrenmitglied zahlreicher nationaler und internationaler perinatologischer Gesellschaften. Zudem erhielt er das goldene Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um das Land Wien. Prim. i.R. Univ.Prof. Dr. Kurt Baumgarten war Gründer der Blutspendezentrale sowie Mitbegründer des Mutter-Kind-Passes.

Prim. i.R. Univ.Prof. Dr. Kurt Baumgarten habilitierte sich 1967 mit der Monographie „Die Beeinflussung der Uterusmotilität“. Zuvor absolvierte er Auslandsaufenthalte in Cleveland und am lateinamerikanischen Institut für Perinatologie in Montevideo. 1972 wurde er zunächst außerordentlicher Professor, 1974 §31 Professor.
