About

Mr White is a leading Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma and Sports Knee Surgeon based at Nuffield Health Edinburgh Hospital, specialising in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of complex knee injuries.

With more than 20 years’ experience, he is recognised as one of Scotland’s most skilled arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgeons, offering advanced treatments for ACL tears, ligament reconstruction, patella stabilisation, cartilage repair and cartilage transplantation.

He also has specialist expertise in the surgical management of hamstring tears, including delayed and complex repairs.

Expert in sports knee injuries

Mr White regularly treats professional athletes and elite sportsmen and sportswomen, including players from leading Premier League teams in Edinburgh and Glasgow. His reputation for excellence in sports surgery is highlighted by his successful management of a professional footballer who returned to play in the 2022 Qatar World Cup following ACL reconstruction.

Working in close collaboration with sports physicians, musculoskeletal radiologists, physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists, he provides a comprehensive, patient‑centred knee service designed to help individuals of all activity levels return safely to sport, exercise and active living.

Acute knee injury specialist – Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh

Within the NHS, Mr White co‑leads the Acute Knee Injuries Clinic at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, one of the most established services of its kind in Scotland. The clinic accepts referrals from the Lothians, Borders, Fife, Perth and Dundee, as well as from fellow orthopaedic surgeons seeking expert assessment and management of complex or urgent knee conditions.

Senior orthopaedic trauma surgeon

Mr White is a senior member of one of the UK’s busiest major trauma services, performing intricate reconstruction for traumatic fractures, dislocations and combined soft‑tissue injuries. His extensive trauma experience underpins his expertise in treating severe knee injuries and complex ligament damage.

Researcher, educator and international clinical leader

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr White is a leading academic in his field. He is a Reader (Associate Professor) at the University of Edinburgh, a past President of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, and Director of multiple national and international orthopaedic training courses.

He has authored over 100 peer‑reviewed scientific papers and is the lead author of the best‑selling textbook in Orthopaedic Trauma, used worldwide by surgeons and trainees.

Referral guidance

Mr White does not perform total knee replacements. Patients seeking treatment for advanced or end‑stage knee arthritis are recommended to consult Mr M Moran, Mr I Ahmed, Mr P Middleton, who specialise in joint replacement surgery.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
