Mr. Ravichandran Karthikeyan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a career specialising in complex and primary hip replacements, pelvic and acetabular trauma, complex lower limb trauma, and periprosthetic fractures of the lower limb at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
Mr. Karthikeyan graduated with an MBBS in 1996 from Madras Medical College and completed his basic surgical training in Yorkshire, passing the AFRCS in 2002. He entered the West Midlands Orthopaedic Training Programme in 2004. During his higher surgical orthopaedic training, he passed the intercollegiate exit exam in Orthopaedics and Trauma - FRCS (Tr& Orth) in 2008 and was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Orthopaedic Training (CCT) in 2010.
He was selected for the prestigious Cavendish Fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2010, where he received advanced training in primary and complex revision arthroplasty of the hip and knee joints. After completing this fellowship in 2011, he pursued a second advanced fellowship in pelvic and acetabular trauma at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
In 2013, Mr. Karthikeyan was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. He provides a tertiary regional pelvic and acetabular trauma service at the Major Trauma Centre for the West Midlands region. His role includes managing complex cases and offering advanced surgical solutions to his patients.
Mr. Karthikeyan is deeply involved in medical education. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham in the School of Health Sciences and has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and serves as a Senior Academy Tutor for 5th-year medical students at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
His contributions to the field were showcased in the BBC documentary series “Surgeons at the Edge of Life,” which highlighted emergency surgical treatments at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Mr. Karthikeyan is an active member of several professional organisations, including the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Hip Society.
