Mr Nastro qualified in Medicine in 1999 at the University of Naples “Federico II”, Italy, where he also completed a Diploma of Specialisation in General Surgery with First Class Honours in 2005. In 2003, he completed a fellowship in colorectal surgery at the University of Hull. He undertook higher surgical training in London, completing a Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training (CCST) in General Surgery (Colorectal Surgery) in 2014. He then pursued a senior fellowship in colorectal surgery at St Mark’s Hospital, London, and a Travelling Fellowship at Osaka Medical School in Japan.
In 2015, Mr Nastro was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Darent Valley Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital. He is Surgical College Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons, Undergraduate Surgical Lead for King’s College University and Kent and Medway Medical School, and Robotic Clinical Coordinator at Darent Valley Hospital, where he leads on robotic colorectal surgery. He is also a representative for the ACPGBI South East Chapter. His private practice mirrors his NHS work.
Mr Nastro has a strong research background with 24 peer-reviewed publications, over 70 conference abstracts, and book chapters on colorectal surgery. His published graduation theses focused on genetic prognostic factors in colorectal cancer (MD, University of Naples, 1999) and stapled haemorrhoidopexy versus conventional haemorrhoidectomy (Postgraduate Diploma, University of Naples, 2005).
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (including its Directive Council), the European Society of Coloproctology, the Italian Society of Coloproctology, and the Italian Medical Society of Great Britain. He also holds JAG certification for colonoscopy (levels 1 and 2) and flexible sigmoidoscopy.
