About Mr Michael Smith
Mr Michael Smith is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in cataract surgery and the full spectrum of glaucoma management. With more than 20 years of surgical experience and thousands of procedures performed, he is recognised for his expertise in advanced cataract surgery, including toric lens implantation for astigmatism and extended depth-of-focus lenses. Mr Smith is equally accomplished in glaucoma care and was among the first ophthalmologists in the UK to integrate Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) into routine clinical practice. He offers the complete range of glaucoma treatments, from medical management to laser and surgical interventions, ensuring patients receive tailored, evidence-based care. He practises at Exeter Eye, having completed his medical degree at the University of Glasgow. His ophthalmic training took place across the South West of England, Manchester and Brisbane, Australia. In 2008, he pursued a prestigious Fellowship in Medical and Surgical Glaucoma at the University of Toronto, after which he was appointed as a Glaucoma Consultant in Exeter. Mr Smith is an active member of multiple national and international professional bodies, including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the American Glaucoma Society, the European Glaucoma Society, and the UK and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. With over 20 peer-reviewed publications he has contributed significantly to clinical research and has played a major role in training the next generation of glaucoma surgeons, many of whom now practise across the UK and worldwide.
