After studying medicine in Manchester, Professor Gnanalingham completed his neurosurgical training in London, including specialist training in complex spinal surgery and pituitary surgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He also trained in minimally invasive techniques at leading centres in the UK and US.

He leads the Manchester Pituitary Service and introduced the endoscopic “keyhole” technique to the region in 2005, improving recovery times and outcomes for patients with conditions such as acromegaly and Cushing’s disease. His spinal expertise includes the treatment of degenerative disc disease, day-case discectomy, spinal trauma and spinal tumours, with a focus on motion-preserving and minimally invasive procedures that reduce pain and speed recovery.

Professor Gnanalingham believes in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach to care, working closely with other specialists to ensure the best outcomes for his patients. Surgery is usually considered only when medical and non-operative treatments have not been successful. Where surgery is required, he frequently uses minimally invasive (“keyhole”) techniques, which help to reduce blood loss, tissue damage, post-operative pain and recovery times.

In addition to his clinical work, Professor Gnanalingham has a strong interest in research, with over 120 publications and international presentations. His research has contributed to advances in the understanding and treatment of pituitary and spinal conditions. He is frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings and to conduct workshops on spinal and pituitary disorders.
