He has over 16 years experience as a consutlant spinal neurosurgeon and holds an NHS consultant post at Salford Royal, Northern Care Alliance, Manchester. He also sees private patients at the Orth Team Centre (next to Spire Manchester Hospital), Circle The Alexandra Hospital and HCA The Wilmslow Hospital. He performs surgery on prviate patients at Spire manchester Hospital and Circle The Alexandra Hospital.
Mr Leach specialises in the diagnosis and surgical management of spinal conditions including neck and arm pain, back and leg pain, disc prolapse, spinal stenosis and spinal tumours.
Many conditions can be managed wihtout surgery using a multi-discplinary team approach including radiologists, sports doctors, pain specialists and less invasive procedures such as injections are commonly performed. Mr Leach set up teh fortnightly OrthTeam spinal MDT where your case will benefit from expert team discussion.
His clinical practice focuses on cervical and lumbar spine surgery, including cervical disc replacement, spinal fusion, minimally invasive spinal surgery, microsurgery for lumbar disc prolapse and decompression for spinal stenosis. He also performs complaex surgery for spinal tumours including intradural tumours and crani-cervical junction problems.
Patient reported outcomes on the British Spine Registry confirm excellent outcomes from his spinal surgery.
Mr Leach has particular expertise in navigated spinal surgery and the use of intra-operative neurophysiological monitoring to improve surgical accuracy and patient safety. His research interests focus on intra-operative technology including navigation systems and neurophysiological monitoring. He is also actively involved in surgical education, serving as invited faculty on multiple national surgeon training courses and speaking at national and international spinal surgery meetings.
Mr Leach was raised in Sydney, Australia, and completed his pre-clinical medical education at the University of Cambridge, where he was awarded an MA (Hons) in Neurophysiology. He undertook his clinical medical training at the University of Oxford, graduating in 1998. He completed his neurosurgical training at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, and undertook a specialist fellowship at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, with a focus on minimally invasive spinal fusion and brain tumours.
Mr Leach has presented research at national and international conferences in areas including on cervical spine surgery, minimally invasive spinal surgery, orthobiologics and spinal trauma. He also has a clinical interest in inflammatory spinal conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis of the spine.
Mr Leach is a member of the British Association of Spine Surgeons, the Society of British Neurosurgeons, the British Medical Association, and is an NHS England Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery Clinical Reference Group member. He holds the qualification FRCS (Neurosurgery).
