Mr Farinella completed medical school at the University of Palermo in Italy. His surgical training was at the University of Perugia in Italy, where he achieved his MD qualification and CCT in General Surgery. He spent his final 2 years of surgical training at the St Mark's Hospital and Royal Marsden Hospital to gain exposure to complex gastrointestinal (GI) and colorectal cases. Further specialist training in laparoscopic and open GI surgery was gained on the highly regarded North-West Thames rotation in London and a laparoscopic fellowship with colorectal subspecialty interest.

Mr Farinella has published many research papers, and has presented his work at several national and international conferences. He has conducted numerous research projects and clinical audits, including the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA), of which he is the Surgical Lead. He is the Emergency Surgery Lead in the Trust and is involved with promoting several quality improvement projects to elevate the standards of the emergency surgical care.
