About Mr Dirk Brinkmann
Mr Brinkmann is both a consultant gynaecologist and a gynaecological cancer surgeon working in NHS and private practise. He has practiced medicine on three continents over the past 20 years, gaining a wealth of knowledge and an appreciation of what constitutes great medicine and excellent patient experience. He is deeply committed to the prevention and care of gynaecological cancers and uniquely qualified to treat women suffering from reproductive cancers in particular. Dr Brinkmann's training began at the University of Cape Town's world famous Groote Schuur hospital (First in Obstetrics & Gynaecology) followed by Brown University's Women and Infants Hospital and Harvard University's Beth Israel Hospital in USA. His specialist training in gynaecology and obstetrics took place in London at King's College Hospital and he continued his focus in women's cancer and completed his sub-specialisation in gynaecological cancer (surgery) in Southampton and Portsmouth in 2005. As a specialist cancer surgeon, Mr Brinkmann has worked alongside some of the most respected professors in the field. He has wide experience in the management of all aspects of general gynaecology as well as complex major surgery for gynaecological cancers. This includes minimally invasive (keyhole) and robotic surgery, which drastically reduces the impact and stress of surgery on patients. He cares for women from late teenage years, through to menopause and beyond, providing prevention and screening methods, treatment of common gynaecological symptoms, through to specialist and cancer surgery. In 2002, Dr Brinkmann became a research fellow in the translational oncology research centre of Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK). His research focused on a genetic and statistical approach for the diagnosis of dual-site cancers and was published in the respected Journal of the National Cancer Institute. He also participated in the renowned UKCTOCS research trial into ovarian cancer screening, the largest screening programme of its type in the world. He authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented at major conferences. Diseases, Medical Tests and Treatments • Ovarian cyst removal • Colposcopy • Hysterectomy surgery • Hysteroscopy procedure • Laparoscopy investigation and treatment • Vaginal repair operation • Fertility-sparing surgery for cervical and ovarian cancer • Laparoscopic and robotic surgery • Reconstructive surgery of the pelvis • Guidance and management of familial cancer.
