About Prof Christopher Liu OBE
Professor Christopher Liu OBE is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with over four decades of clinical experience in the public sector and more than thirty years in private practice. He was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2018 New Year Honours for Services to Ophthalmology. Professor Liu is internationally recognised for his expertise in complex corneal surgery, particularly in artificial corneae (keratoprostheses). He served as the NHS England Lead Consultant at the National Referral Centre for osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP), a highly specialised procedure for restoring sight in patients with end-stage corneal blindness. He is one of a very small number of surgeons globally trained to perform this operation. He has held multiple leadership roles including President of the British Society for Refractive Surgery, Medical Contact Lens and Ocular Surface Association, and Southern Ophthalmological Society. He has served as Honorary Treasurer and Trustee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where he was also a Council Member and Regional Representative for the South East. Professor Liu has published over 250 scientific papers and holds numerous honorary academic appointments in the UK and abroad. He is a UK pioneer in DMEK corneal transplantation and immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery, with a track record of surgical innovation and invention.
