Cardiothoracic Surgery
About
Mr Young graduated from Sheffield University Medical School in 1980, before undergoing specialist training in London. He obtained a doctorate in medicine in 1991 for his research as a British Heart Foundation Junior Research Fellow. He expanded his expertise through training at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
His specialist interests include all aspects of aortic and mitral valve replacement. He is a specialist in keyhole and percutaneous aortic valve replacement and lectures internationally on the subject as well as training other surgeons in the procedures.
Mr Young is a very skilled surgeon and undertakes twice as many thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs as other surgeons in the UK with excellent success rates. Similarly, he is immensely proud of his successes in the fields of coronary artery surgery (having only had one mortality in the last seven years of practice).
He is a director of the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) programme at the private London Bridge Hospital (the private practice with the most experience in this minimally invasive technique in the UK). He is, therefore, very well-positioned to offer these procedures to private patients.
As well as running a busy and successful practice, Mr Young is a central figure in the world of cardiac and vascular surgery within the UK and beyond. He takes a very active role in the training of future cardiothoracic surgeons, is an honorary senior lecturer for the University of London, has served as a member of the Royal Society of Medicine for over ten years and is an honorary consultant to the British Army and Church of England.
