About

Mr. Brendan Smith is a highly experienced Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon. He qualified in 1991 from Charing Cross and Westminster medical School. Following completion of a junior surgical training rotation through Charing Cross Hospital and completing my college fellowship exams (FRCS Eng 1996) he achieved a research fellowship studying the ‘detection of micrometastases in breast cancer' devising a new semi quantitative method of detecting microscopic collections of cancer cells in blood and bone marrow, gaining a higher Masters of Surgery degree (MS University of London) in 2004.

As a dedicated career breast surgeon from an early stage he gained a senior surgical training post through the University of Oxford Surgical rotation in 1996 completing my FRCS (Gen Surg) in 2004. During senior surgical training in 2003 he succeeded in gaining Oncoplastic fellowship at the Christie and South Manchester University Hospitals; a prestigious fellowship to be awarded.

Following completion of my fellowship Mr. Smith was appointed as the first Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2004. Since then he started and developed the current Oncoplastic breast unit which was the only such service in South central region until 2011. This Included the introduction of regular onsite delayed and immediate breast reconstruction, nipple reconstruction and areola tattooing and a breast reduction service. In addition he introduced techniques extending the range of breast conservation (therapeutic mammoplasty) implant reconstruction using ADM or prosthetic mesh; producing better surgical and cosmetic outcomes for his patients. He also undertakes Symmetrisation reduction, augmentation and mastopexy. Over the last 3 years he has introduced partial breast reconstruction techniques to Reading, with great success.

Over the last 14 years I have trained many other current Oncoplastic Breast surgeons both in Oxford and other regions, he has a strong teaching and training background being invited onto the teaching Faculty for the level 1 and Level 2 Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction Surgery courses since 2010 to the current time. Haivnge been course director for the level 2 Oncoplastic breast reconstruction course since 2012 through the Royal College of Surgeons of England; he is passionate about training the next generation of doctors.

Mr Smith is also a faculty member and tutor for the University of East Anglia MS degree in Oncoplastic breast surgery, in addition to which he has been teaching faculty on the Oxford Oncoplastic breast surgery course since its inception in 2012.

Mr. Smith is passionate about his specialty with huge experience and success with his patients; he is a true artist and professional.
