About
Mr Smith completed his medical degree at Imperial College London in 1991, followed by his postgraduate training in Leicester and Nottingham. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Chemical Pathology at the University of London in 1998, followed by his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nottingham in 1999. Mr Smith completed his training via an Advanced Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Clinical Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the United States in 2003. In 2003, he became a Fellow in General Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and completed his United States Medical Licensing Exam.
In his current clinical practice at St James' Hospital, Mr Smith is the Clinical Lead for Emergency General Surgery. He has extensive experience in pancreatic surgery and laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery, performing over 200 laparoscopic cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal) and 80 major pancreatic resections every year. He sees patients with various conditions, including: chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, pancreatic cysts, hernia (inguinal, umbilical, femoral, epigastric and hiatus), gallstones and gallbladder disease.
Alongside his work at the hospital, Mr Smith is also an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Leeds, an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons and the President Elect of the Pancreas Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
