He graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) in 2000. He subsequently completed a Master of Science in Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff University and a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
Mr Howieson completed his surgical training in Cambridge before undertaking advanced subspecialty fellowships. These included a lower limb arthroplasty fellowship in New Zealand and a specialist knee fellowship at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol, where he further developed his expertise in complex knee surgery.
His clinical interests include lower limb trauma, total and partial knee replacement, joint preservation techniques, and sports knee surgery such as ACL reconstruction and meniscal repair. He is an active member of professional organisations including the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine and the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland.
