About Mr Michael Hughes
Mr Michael Hughes is a Consultant Orthopaedic & Major Trauma Surgeon based in Liverpool, specialising in shoulder, elbow, and trauma surgery. He provides private care at Renacres Hospital and holds an NHS consultant post at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His clinical expertise includes complex upper limb orthopaedic trauma surgery, sports injuries, rotator cuff repairs, shoulder impingement syndrome, shoulder replacement, shoulder girdle surgery, and keyhole (arthroscopic) procedures. He also performs carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel decompressions. Mr Hughes also specialises in general and major trauma surgery in his NHS practice. Mr Hughes graduated with a BSc (Hons) in 2004 and an MB ChB (Hons) in 2010 from the University of Liverpool. He became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2013 and earned the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2017. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery) in 2019 and completed his specialist training in 2020. To further refine his skills, Mr Hughes completed advanced fellowships at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit and the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit, focusing on shoulder and elbow surgery. He is a member of several professional organisations, including the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and the British Orthopaedic Association, reflecting his commitment to excellence in orthopaedic care. Alongside his surgical speciality Mr Hughes volunteers as a Pre-Hospital Critical Care doctor and regularly attends serious medical and trauma incidents on behalf of the North West Ambulance Service, reflecting his interest in trauma care and commitment to ensuring the best possible care from roadside to theatre. Mr Hughes is a Trauma Team Leader at Aintree Major Trauma Centre and an instructor on the European Trauma Course.
