Professional statement
Mr Mark Norton is a leading Consultant Orthopaedic hip expert based in Truro,
Cornwall, UK.
He operateat the Ramsay Duchy Hospital. He specialises only in hip
surgery, with particular expertise in ceramic and metal on metal hip resurfacing">hip
resurfacing, total hip replacement, hip impingement surgery and revision
of problematic hip replacement.
He has been a highly active sportsman his entire life and is particularly supportive of
active individuals with hip problems trying to get back to higher levels of
activity post surgery.
He has a unique insight into the patient perspective on hip surgery having personally
had his own hip replaced with a ceramic hip resurfacing in February 2026.
HipResurfacing: He is one of the few surgeons in the world currently able to offer a choice of both of
the innovative newly available ceramic hip resurfacing implants; the ReCerf®">ReCerf® and H1®">H1® . He is able to offer both implants due to his 20 year experience of over 800 resurfacing operations on active adults, his participation in the investigative trials on the H1
resurfacing from 2018 onwards, as well as being a surgeon Consultant for
MatOrtho who manufacture the ReCerf. He
is expecting the number of resurfacings to rapidly rise with the introduction
of the new ceramic hip resurfacings which are fully licensed for use in female
and male patients. This significantlyextends the number of patients in whom resurfacing rather than replacement technology may be appropriate.
Total hip replacement: With over 20 years’ experience in routine and complex hip surgery, Mr. Norton hasundertaken approximately 7000 total hip replacements and over 800 hip resurfacing operations in his consultant career. He has replaced hips in people
as young as 16 to as old as 107 years of age. He offers a range of total hip
replacements which are tailored to each patient’s needs and anatomy rather than
a one size fits all solution. He uses uncemented and cemented total hip
replacements with ceramic, plastic and dual mobility bearings when
appropriate and has options for the use of Minihip and custom implants
for more complex anatomy.
Robotic hip replacement surgery vs Laser guided patients specific computer assisted hip surgery: read very carefully if this is of particular interest to you as thisinformation is not widely publicized outside of professional literature. Mr. Norton was an early
adopter of robotic surgery having been involved in the initial trial of robotic
hip resurfacing surgery in 2008 using the Acrobot robot system. He did not
find any technical benefit due to inability of robotic systems to understand
the nuances of individual patient biomechanics. He has subsequently been an
innovator in the use of 3-dimensional state-of-the-art pre-operative imaging, personalised surgical planning and laser guided, computer assisted hip replacement
surgery which he has found to be superior to the robotics system to date. His
opinion is currently strongly supported by evidence published by the Australian
National Joint Registry in 2025, demonstrating superiority of computer
guided total hip replacement surgery over conventional hip replacement. In
stark contrast, inferiority of robotic hip replacement surgery over standard
hip replacement was found in the registry data results with a significantly
higher risk of failure and infection within the first 2 years after surgery.
He is able to offer patient specific computer-guided surgery delivering tailored
treatment plans for each patient under his care if required. He has been using
the Optimized Positioning System (OPS) software since 2017 and is
internationally recognized as being an expert in the interpretation and use of
this system to enhance patient care and reduce risks of complications.
Hip impingement: He has a vast experience of over20 years in the diagnosis and management of hip pain without obvious osteoarthritis in young and active adults. His practice focuses on preserving the native hip joint wherever possible, while offering advanced resurfacing, or replacement solutions when preservation is no longer appropriate.
Professional opinions – LinkedIn:
He runs the LinkedIn OPS user group for surgeons and industry
professionals to discuss complex biomechanical cases. He is active in complex
case discussions on the LinkedIn platform, so his views and opinions are able
to be publicly viewed with respect to his professional work.

minimally invasive techniques to complex open surgery. He is particularly respected
for his meticulous surgical technique and his commitment to minimising
damage to muscles, tendons, and ligaments, ensuring optimal recovery and
long-term function.
Team: Mr Norton works together with a highly supportive team of secretarial members who
are able to respond rapidly to patient queries or concerns. He has a very
stable long term team of highly effective expert operating theatre members
ensuring a professional, calm and efficient atmosphere for patients throughout
their care. He works with a very small team of regular anaesthetists who have
extremely high skill levels and a long experience. His perioperative care team
