Mr Kam Cheema
Orthopaedic Surgery
About
Mr Cheema completed his specialist orthopaedic training on the prestigious South East London Orthopaedic Rotation, gaining extensive experience at world-leading centres including King’s College Hospital, Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital. He then undertook a fellowship at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC), one of Europe’s highest-volume joint replacement centres. Under the mentorship of internationally recognised professors, he refined his expertise in joint replacement surgery, robotic-assisted surgery and muscle-sparing techniques designed to enhance accuracy and optimise rehabilitation. This training shaped his commitment to adopting state-of-the-art, minimally invasive approaches that reduce postoperative pain and accelerate return to movement.
His clinical expertise includes total Hip replacement, total and partial Knee replacement, Knee arthroscopy and regenerative medicine for joint preservation. He has a particular interest in day-case arthroplasty and rapid recovery pathways, enabling eligible patients to return home on the same day as their surgery while still receiving comprehensive postoperative support. His broader philosophy centres on safe, efficient care that helps patients regain confidence, independence and quality of life as swiftly and comfortably as possible.
In his NHS practice at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, where he also serves as the Medical Education Lead for Trauma and Orthopaedics, Mr Cheema provides high-quality care to a diverse patient community. Having grown up in South East London and Kent, he remains strongly connected to the region and is committed to delivering care that reflects its needs.
Patients value Mr Cheema for his approachable style, clear communication and commitment to tailored, individual care. He takes time to understand each patient’s goals, lifestyle and expectations, ensuring that treatment decisions reflect what matters most to them. His consultations are calm and unhurried, focused on providing clear explanations that are easy to understand. Many patients describe his professionalism, empathy and ability to explain complex conditions in a reassuring way as key components of their
positive experience.
Collaboration is a cornerstone of his practice. Mr Cheema works closely with physiotherapists, specialist nurses, anaesthetists, sports physicians and pain specialists to ensure patients receive comprehensive and well-coordinated care. He is an active member of the arthroplasty multidisciplinary team, contributing to the management of complex cases such as periprosthetic fractures and revision joint replacement. This collaborative structure ensures that patients receive the right expertise at every stage — from initial assessment to surgery, rehabilitation and long-term follow-up.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Cheema is deeply committed to surgical education, and this dedication has been widely acknowledged. He has been nominated for Trainer of the Year on multiple occasions and was awarded an International Travelling Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding commitment to his trainees. As Medical Education Lead, he plays a central role in shaping orthopaedic training within his NHS Trust, fostering an environment that prioritises learning, development and the highest standards of surgical
practice. He teaches on national and international courses, chairs journal clubs and contributes to postgraduate examination preparation, reflecting his firm belief that excellent training leads directly to excellent patient care.
An accomplished academic, Mr Cheema has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented his research nationally and internationally. His work has been recognised with several prizes and bursaries, and he remains actively engaged in evidence-based practice and ongoing surgical innovation to ensure his patients receive the most modern and effective treatments available.
Outside of medicine, Mr Cheema enjoys keeping active and views fitness as an important part of his own wellbeing — a principle he often shares with patients during discussions about recovery and long-term joint health. He also enjoys long walks with his dog, which provide a welcome balance to the demands of his surgical and teaching roles. His upbringing in South East London and Kent gives him a lasting connection to the communities he serves, reinforcing his commitment to providing care that is both technically excellent and deeply compassionate.
Across all aspects of his work, Mr Cheema combines surgical expertise, innovation, empathy and a dedication to the highest standards of patient-centred care. Whether managing early arthritis, delivering advanced joint replacement or supporting patients through complex reconstructive surgery, his goal remains the same: to restore movement, relieve pain and help patients return to the activities they enjoy with confidence and comfort.
