He is one of a small number of surgeons in the UK able to offer the full spectrum of modern surgical sleep apnoea treatments, ranging from minimally invasive nasal and palatal procedures through to advanced multilevel airway reconstruction, hypoglossal nerve stimulation implantation, and transoral robotic surgery (TORS).

He has pioneered hypoglossal nerve stimulation technology at Barts Health as part of a specialist multidisciplinary sleep surgery programme and has extensive experience with both Inspire and Genio hypoglossal nerve stimulation systems. He is currently the highest-volume Genio implanter in the UK.

A central part of Mr Ahmed’s approach is detailed anatomical assessment of the upper airway using drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE), an advanced airway investigation performed under sedation. This allows precise identification of the anatomical sites responsible for airway collapse during sleep and enables highly personalised treatment planning tailored to each patient’s airway anatomy.

Mr Ahmed frequently manages complex tertiary referral patients with persistent obstructive sleep apnoea, including many who have struggled with CPAP or undergone unsuccessful previous surgery elsewhere. His practice combines advanced airway anatomy assessment with minimally invasive and reconstructive surgical techniques designed to restore natural breathing during sleep while preserving long-term function.

He is also one of the highest-volume transoral robotic surgeons in the UK, having performed more than 300 transoral robotic surgery (TORS) procedures using Da Vinci robotic systems for both benign and malignant throat pathology. His robotic surgical practice focuses strongly on minimally invasive scarless surgery with maximal preservation of breathing, speech, swallowing, and quality of life.

Alongside his airway and sleep surgery practice, Mr Ahmed maintains a major tertiary referral practice in thyroid and head and neck cancer surgery. He is one of the core thyroid surgeons within the Barts Health Thyroid Multidisciplinary Team and performs a high volume of thyroid and parathyroid surgery with exceptionally low complication rates.

He works within a specialist multidisciplinary cancer team able to resect and reconstruct the full spectrum of head and neck malignancies, with a strong emphasis on preserving speech, swallowing, airway function, appearance, and long-term quality of life.

Educated at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London, Mr Ahmed graduated with distinction and was awarded the Gold Medal in Pathology. He also holds a PhD in Molecular Oncology from the Barts Cancer Institute, where his research focused on immunity-based cancer therapies.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Ahmed remains actively involved in research, surgical education, and innovation. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and Education Co-Lead for ENT at Barts Health, helping train higher surgical trainees and junior doctors across London.
