Dr Chua graduated from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine London in 1987. He was awarded a First Class Honours in the Intercalated BSc and an MB, BS degree. He took up cardiology specialty training in various London teaching hospitals including St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Royal Free Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital. He was a British Heart Foundation Research Fellow, researching into heart failure pathophysiology leading to an MD degree (University of London).
Accredited as a specialist in the United Kingdom both in general medicine and cardiology since 1999, his specialist interests arising from his broad-based training include coronary artery disease, interventional cardiology (coronary artery angioplasty and stenting), heart failure, valvular heart disease, hypertension, atrial fibrillation and bradycardia pacing. He is an NHS consultant at the Royal Surrey Foundation Trust and Frimley Park Hospital. He was also a consultant at at St George’s Hospital,
London until 2020. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), London,
a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and a Fellow of the American
College of Cardiology (FACC).
Dr Chua is a dedicated interventional cardiologist with many years of experience and also diverse interests in general cardiology. He has helped many patients with heart conditions. He performs life-saving procedures such as percutaneous coronary intervention (coronary balloon angioplasty and stents) in patients with acute heart attacks and pacemakers for patients in severe heart block. He has treated many patients with coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, infective endocarditis,
resistant hypertension, atrial fibrillation, cardiomyopathies, decompensated
heart failure and pericardial disease. He uses various diagnostic tests
including echocardiography (transthoracic and transoesophageal), coronary CT angiogram, cardiac MRI, nuclear myocardial perfusion scan and invasive coronary
angiography.
Dr. Chua has over 50 publications in international journals and has trained many medical students and trainee doctors, many of whom are now consultants.
At the Royal Surrey Hospital, Dr. Chua has played a pivotal role in developing cardiology services, including the new cardiac catheter lab and day ward, initiating local electrophysiology services, and consolidating the heart failure team. Formerly the Clinical Director of Cardiology at the hospital and President of the Guildford and Godalming branch of the British Heart Foundation, Dr. Chua endeavours to provide good cardiac care with kindness and compassion.
