Dr Nita Patel is a consultant clinical oncologist specialising in all aspects on non-surgical management of breast cancer. She qualified from University College London Medical School in 2000, graduating in the top 10% of her year. She went on to achieve Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2004, followed by Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 2007.
She completed her specialist training in Clinical Oncology at leading centres including Charing Cross Hospital, Mount Vernon Cancer Centre and University College London Hospital. After completing her training, Dr Patel undertook an international fellowship in prostate cancer at the McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, Canada, further broadening her expertise in modern oncological care, publishing her research in several distinguished international journals.
She was appointed as a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Royal Surrey Cancer Centre (formerly St Luke's) in 2014.
Dr Patel is a highly experienced oncologist, having over 20 years experience in treating primary and secondary breast cancer patients using all types of treatment modalities;
-Chemotherapy
-Radiotherapy
-Immunotherapy
-Targeted treatment eg CDK4/6 inhibitors
-Antibody treatment eg Phesgo, Herceptin
As a clinical oncologist, she is able to provide both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, allowing for streamlined, coordinated care without the need for referral between different oncology specialists.
She is the Principal Investigator at the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre for two major national breast radiotherapy trials, PARABLE and FastForward boost. Through this work, Dr Patel has developed advanced expertise in contemporary breast radiotherapy techniques designed to minimise side-effects to surrounding organs.
As a female oncologist, Dr Patel understands the concerns a woman diagnosed with breast cancer may have with body image, fertility, sexual health and menopausal symptoms. She prides herself in treating patients holistically, having honest conversations with patients to allow them to make the best decision for themselves and their treatment pathway.
