Dr Dinesh Kumar
Psychiatry
About
He is passionate about progress in mental health research and has been the Principal Investigator for many research projects. He is currently involved in a clinical study at University College London, investigating how to safely reduce medication dosages for people with psychosis and schizophrenia.
Dr Kumar aims to always build a full understanding of his patients as unique individuals with their strengths and needs, going beyond their current mental health difficulties. He is committed to treating all patients with the utmost respect and dignity to give the best possible chance of a complete recovery. He believes that a person's illness is not their identity, and when developing a personalised treatment plan, his goal is to help a person rather than a patient. However he also recognises that recovery is not one step, it is a lifelong journey that takes place one day, one step at a time.
Dr Kumar has been working as a Consultant Psychiatrist with the NHS since 2003, currently in the role of Clinical Consultant and Honorary CBT Therapist for an NHS Early Intervention in Psychosis service. He is a General Adult Psychiatry specialist and member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK.
Dr Kumar completed his MBBS in 1995 at the University of Delhi, India. He then completed a Diploma in Psychological Medicine at the NIHMANS, India in 2000 and a Diplomate in National Board-Psychiatry in India in 2001. He became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK in 2004. Dr Kumar later developed his skills in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) by completing a postgraduate course in CBT in 2017 and another in Enhanced CBT for Psychosis and Bipolar in 2019, both from the University of Oxford.
