About Dr Anil Kumar
Dr Anil Kumar is a well experienced Psychiatrist at Priory Hospital Roehampton specialising in General Adult Psychiatry, subspecialising in Substance Misuse Psychiatry. He completed his medical degree at the University of Lucknow, India in 1972 before moving to the UK to complete his training program in psychiatry. He was awarded his Membership with the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2000 following the completion of his residency training. After this, he completed his clinical SpR training and began working as an SpR in the National Alcohol Unit and Drug Dependency Unit. Dr Kumar has over 26 years of experience in psychiatry and has practiced as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust for over 18 years. He has also been an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neurology since 2016. Dr Kumar has expertise treating patients (including community, acute inpatient and day patients) above the age of 18 presenting with a wide range of conditions such as the following: • First episode and chronic psychosis • Treatment-resistant psychosis • Mood disorders (e.g. mania, depression and bipolar affective disorder) • Alcohol addiction and substance misuse • Stress disorders (e.g. PTSD, OCD and acute stress reaction) • Anxiety disorders • Somatisation disorder Dr Kumar is well trained in several therapeutic modalities, including the following: • Cognitive behavioural therapy • Psychodynamic psychotherapy • Mindfulness-based therapies • Trauma therapy (Life Span Integration) Outside of his work in the clinic, Dr Kumar has published several papers on clinically relevant areas such as cognition and treatment in schizophrenia. His work has been published in top peer-reviewed journals, including Brain and the British Journal of Psychiatry.
