Mr Abtin Alvand is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon with his NHS practice based at the internationally recognised Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, part of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His practice is dedicated exclusively to knee surgery, and he is recognised as one of the highest-volume revision knee surgeons in England according to the National Joint Registry. He has particular expertise in unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement, revision knee replacement, and the management of prosthetic joint infections.
Mr Alvand graduated from the University of London and completed his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Oxford rotation. He went on to undertake a DPhil (PhD) at the University of Oxford, focusing on improving surgical training and performance in unicompartmental knee replacement. In 2015, he was appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at Oxford, followed by his role as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017.
He completed advanced sub-specialist fellowships in complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford and at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. He was also a travelling fellow with the European Bone and Joint Infection Society and undertook further fellowship training in peri-prosthetic joint infection at the Rothman Institute.
Clinically, his work encompasses partial and total knee replacement, revision (re-do) knee replacement, arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery, and the management of cartilage defects, including stem cell techniques. He is particularly experienced in treating complex and infected knee replacements.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Alvand has a strong academic profile, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications and more than 400 national and international presentations. He is a regular invited speaker and has contributed as faculty to international consensus groups on peri-prosthetic joint infection. He is also involved in UK working groups focused on revision knee surgery and infection, aiming to improve standards of care.
His research interests include enhancing surgical training and performance, improving outcomes in unicompartmental knee replacement and revision surgery, managing peri-prosthetic joint infections, and advancing simulation-based and virtual reality training techniques in orthopaedics.
