About Dr John Rawlins
Dr John Rawlins is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton, where he was appointed in 2016. He has a specialist interest in complex coronary intervention and transcatheter valve therapies and currently leads the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) service at University Hospital Southampton. He is also Joint Clinical Lead for cardiomyopathy at the Trust. Dr Rawlins qualified in medicine from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2003, having previously completed a BSc in Physiology at University College London in 2001. The majority of his postgraduate medical training was undertaken across leading London hospitals. He was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2007 and completed a Research Doctorate (MD (Res)) at King’s College London in 2012 under Professor Sanjay Sharma. His doctoral research focused on the cardiac response to exercise in Afro-Caribbean athletes and laid the foundation for his ongoing specialist interest in cardiomyopathy, particularly the differentiation between physiological athletic adaptation and underlying cardiac pathology. Dr Rawlins completed his advanced interventional cardiology training at University Hospital Southampton and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. He has published extensively on cardiac adaptation to exercise and complex coronary intervention and is a regular faculty member at national and international cardiology meetings. He previously served for two years as Regional Lead for Heart Valve Disease on the South East Regional Network Board and continues to contribute nationally as a core committee member of Valve for Life. Alongside his clinical and academic work, Dr Rawlins is a keen athlete. He has competed at both national and international level in triathlon and athletics and continues to race, achieving a top ten age-group finish at the ½ IRONMAN UK Championships in 2023. Outside of work, he enjoys cycling and running when time allows and can often be found supporting his two sons from the sidelines at their sporting events.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
